As you well know by now, the blog holds BMWs in high regard. A combination of technology, design, engine, and overall driving engagement means they continue to hold a soft spot in my heart. But there is another German brand that might be living in my garage if they made a small four-door sedan: Porsche. And all the goodness that makes a P car special is on display in this 2022 Porsche 911 GT3. It’s a tour of Santa’s sleigh.

Wings and wheels

I’ve been around a lot of 911s, and GT3s. For 2022, the car gets a redesign (can we call it an evolution?) from the previous 2019 iteration. It’s typical 911 GT3 – rear-engined, rear-wheel drive with a flat-6 that sounds amazing.

What makes this car so special is the lack of turbochargers breathing into the engine, and a swan-neck rear-wing that makes this thing look every bit the race car. This car had a PDK transmission, but they still make them with a six-speed, so it’s one of the few modern cars left (along with my G80) that offers a new driving experience with an old-school feel. Also special here; a motor that spins to 9,000 RPM, surpassing even my old S65 in the E9X M3. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing this car sounds. If you’re a fan of driving, save up your dollars.

The swan neck wing is unique to this GT3, and it looks awesome.

Inside out

I think the Germans are telling me to lose weight, because this car has similar carbon fiber bucket seats to the G80’s. It’s still a tight fit for me. Worse here is the overall height of the car – you sink DOWN before actually putting butt to bottom cushion.

But once inside, it’s clear why this is more expensive than any BMW, even the M5 CS. Alcantara covers mostly everything, and what’s left is displayed in the finest cow hide. Matching stitching and carbon fiber accents level up the details even more. And hey, tell your date to watch out for the fire extinguisher mounted on the passenger side floor. It looks awesome, especially when matched to this red color.

This is a cool detail, but watch out if you need to pick up your date.

So you never forget what car you own.

PDok

Yes, this example was missing the 6-speed manual. In its place was the PDK, which is Porsche’s version of the DCT available in older M models. This is another step away from BMW M. Wheres they replaced all their DCTs with regular auotmatics, Porsche continues to offer the PDK, providing much quicker shifts. It might not be as “smooth” as an M5 shifting, but it fits the sporting character of the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 much better.

Compare the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 to your G80 M3

It’s been a rivaly almost since the M3 debuted. Here in modern times, there’s really no comparison. The G80 is much more comfortable inside, whereas the 911 is a dedicated sports car meant for back roads and race tracks. They compliment each other in a garage, but never replace.

Most BMW guys move on to Porsche once they have the means to do so, and it’s easy to see why. This car is even more responsive, powerful, and capable than even the best from BMW M, and though the missions are slightly different, if I had to pick just one, it would be in Guard’s Red.
