Don’t settle for this Porsche Boxster Spyder RS

With Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS values hitting all-time highs, I find a brand new one for sale to see if spending over $200k is worth it.

It was a close one – 53% of you would like the Jaaaaag over the Vette. Let’s keep with the sports car theme and remove the top because it’s that time of year in the Northeast when the weather is miserable. I’ve found a “brand new” Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS with the Weissach package on Cars & Bids.

But something isn’t sitting right with me.

I dated a girl about oh, 15 years ago. Really nice. Smart. Pretty. Good head on her shoulders. I suppose if I let things run its course, we could have gotten married eventually. But she just wasn’t the one. It’s a crappy feeling to know you’ve settled, no matter what the reason is.

Which brings me to cars, and this Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS. It’s beautiful. It goes topless (in a very inconvenient way). It has all the things I love from my favorite Porsche, the 718 GT4. But there’s a but. I think this car will easily sell for well over $200,000 ‘Murica monies. That’s a big but.

911 GT3 RS
A GT3 RS is just a bit more (if you go light on options).

See, I believe that once you get to this level of car, you don’t want to settle. A 911 GT3 RS starts at $241k, and isn’t that the RS you’ve lusted after? The Spyder has no stick option, the top is a pain in the ass, and it’s not really a car you track, it’s a car you cruise in or attack back roads. And if that’s your goal, perhaps you’d be happy with a Boxster that’s cheaper?

I’m going to start this by mentioning the selling dealer requires the buyer to give them $85 dollars, which I find insulting on a car costing this much.

  • 37 miles
  • Vanadium Grey Metallic over Black/Carmine Red inside
  • Seven-speed PDK
  • Weissach package, a $13k option alone
  • Clean CarFax
  • 992 GT3-sourced 4.0-liter flat-6 engine, so you’re not really getting a watered-down experience.
  • 493 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque
  • Actually lighter than a hardtop Cayman
  • Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB)
  • Full bucket seats in carbon fiber
  • Current bid: $167,500. The window sticker is $217,630, so it seems silly to bid anything less than that.

This dealer has a few rare cars such as this one that are pretty much brand new. That makes me think they buy them like you and I, and then hope for a quick turnaround. But it didn’t work for them last time.

This is meant to tempt you – if it’s the spec you want, you don’t have to wait for your dealer to order one for you. Instant gratification. And you might come out ahead if your dealer has a crazy markup. Something tells me these guys aren’t going to give you a discount though. In regards to Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS values, some are fetching over $20k above MSRP on the market, or more.

This is the last model year for the 718 with a real engine – they go electric next year. That’s a story for another day though, because you can also get another kind of Boxster…

We’ve already made the decision to settle, but can we save $100,000 and still get a really nice Boxster at the Porsche store now?

  • Same seven-speed PDK, but here the manual is a no-cost option, and thus a no-brainer.
  • The same 4-liter flat-six, but detuned to “just” 394 horses and 317 lb-ft of torque.
  • Same color outside, same carbon buckets seats inside
  • You got me on the wheels and brakes, so lets spec 911 Turbo wheels
  • But the top is power folding and much better to live with

The GTS is one of the few remaining real sports cars.

It’s fast, as you’ll find out in an upcoming review. Sounds good, drives great, performance more attainable on public roads but still waaay more than you need. And I’d feel better spending “just” $120k. I know I’m not getting the best version, but the RS guy actually thinks he is. Plus, this can be had in a manual, which really is the entire point of a Boxster – engagement and fun, not ULTIMATE TRACK DESTROYING WEAPON COPYRIGHT TRADEMARK.

But the RS is really good. So good that you might not care you’re not in a 911. So, how will you spend a quarter of a million dollars at the Porsche store?
