I’ve been coming here since 2018 – six years. People come and go, as do cars. Hell – look back at that first show and see how the E9X still dominated the landscape. But MPACT 2024 was different for me.
I blame myself.
What’s changed in six years?
Mostly, it’s good things. I see a ton of female-owned vehicles – not the “here with my bf” type. They are really into the scene, and some of their BMWs are nicer than yours. Or mine. I’m glad to see the demographic open up.
Tons of vendors now too – remember when the tents were just one row at the front of the paddock? Now it’s crammed on both sides. From motor oil to T-Shirts, if you want to celebrate BMW lifestyle, it’s on display here.
The cars always change, but we’re a particular bunch, aren’t we? Z4s? Nah. i8? Forget it. X4 M? Maybe one or two. Sorry, this should really be named M2-M3-M4-M5PACT. That’s the essence of BMW culture, and that’s why it’s so important BMW not screw up these four core models.
Lastly, the crowd. It keeps getting younger. Or maybe I keep getting older. Whatever – I wish I had events like this to go to when I was 22.
Still, it’s not all sunshine and tire smoke.
MPACT 2024 was expensive
Want to roll race? $400. HPDE? $300. They are fun and well-organized, but with so many people wanting a go, your runs are limited. Tickets sell out instantly and you can’t resell them, so if you get a ticket and your friend doesn’t, you’re both screwed.
Even parking in the show lots costs $75.
The cars are expensive. The parts are expensive. Now the shows are too. Still, of all the events I’ve been to that charge, MPACT remains the only one that feels like you get what you pay for.
“Why didn’t you buy an…”
It’s the question I was asked most while there once the news broke about my new M3. I’ve driven a lot of good cars that aren’t from Bavaria.
But none of them have the community of BMW. I’d say that’s both a good and bad thing. I’ve met a ton of friends because of our shared love of these cars.
But, I’ve also met a few butt heads.
Still, can’t let a few bad apples spoil the bunch, eh?
MPACT 2024 carried on the tradition of being one of the best BMW events of the year, and perhaps the only one left that I look forward to. I won’t let the fact that I’m getting older spoil the fun.
