Good-bye, sweet X3, and apparently good riddance, with 70% say it’s no match for the Macan. Now we turn to Lexus, because parked in my driveway is an RC-F. Seems like it’s been around awhile, and it seems like it doesn’t sell very well. But you know…V-8 for less than $70,000 new? Hell yes, brother.
What about used?
The 2020 Lexus RC-F vs the 2020 BMW M4 Competition
This week, the review is going to focus on a 2004 Mustang Cobra, an ancient thing that’s packaged like it’s from the 1980s. Because it is.
New coupes love you more, mostly because they are based on sedans, and thus offer actual space in the back seat. They aren’t sports cars per se, but they sure can act like one. Kind of like the Lexus RC-F. V-8 from the IS 500. Sport suspension. Looks? Well, two out of three ain’t bad.
You probably haven’t thought about that car in awhile, and it’s because Lexus sold 1,752 last year. Total. Even the non-sporty models. Does that make it a bad car? Not at all. But it does make it harder to obtain on the used market. Track Edition models depreciate less than 20%.
The RC-F hasn’t changed much since its 2016 introduction, but even so, there are less than 100 available nationwide right now. Let’s find a good one, and bring along an M4 for comparison.
The 2020 Lexus RC-F
Though the RC is old, going for the updated model makes it so that you almost can’t even tell. I wouldn’t call the look timeless, but Botox never hurts.
- 8,000 miles
- Ultra White over Circuit Red Leather
- These were all automatic-only, and V-8 only.
- Premium package, and sunroof
- Carbon fiber side blades
- 19-inch BBS wheels
- Bid to $5,000 so far
- Clean CarFax
You can add more carbon to these, which will unlock some new colors, or you can get the Track Edition with carbon ceramic brakes and the looks of a Fast and Furious set extra. Just know that the MSRP on those is over $100,000.
Focusing on just the face-lifted model, you’ll find that they really don’t depreciate much. Regular RC-F models go for over $55k, while the track model has a used price of over $80k – and that’s just with one or two available.
But you already know there’s another option.
The 2020 BMW M4 Coupe
Though this one already sold, you can find a ton of M4s available. Let’s keep it even with an LCI model, from the same year.
- 25,800 miles
- Sold for $50,000 even
- DCT
- Alpine White over Sakhir Orange leather – same color combo as the Lexus.
- Competition Package
- Clean CarFax
I’d call this about as missionary vanilla as it gets for an M4, but there are thousands of examples available in F82 flavor. Some go for even cheaper, and all are as fast as the Lexus.
The IS 500 wasn’t perfect, and I doubt this RC I’m about to review will be either. But sometimes, imperfections can be more fun.
What would you like to try?
