Absolutely no one, zero, nada, zilch, wanted the NSX Type S. And yet, they continue to sell for bonkers pricing. But you know what does depreciate? Fast SUVs. And this week, I found a recently sold BMW X3 M to compare to Jaguar F-PACE SVR values.
I bet you’d be surprised which one I’d like more.
The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR vs the 2022 BMW X3 M Competition
They say you never forget your first…press car? At least I haven’t. It was a beautiful blue F-PACE SVR, and under the hood was a supercharged V-8 with 550 horsepower. That’s impressive, but what really got me going was the symphony. Jag’s V-8 doesn’t sound like anything else, and it makes things like an M8 sound like a vacuum cleaner. Sorry, not sorry.
But the F-Pace is dead. I don’t know what Jaguar is doing, but killing off all the cars with engines seems silly. Perhaps because of their *cough* stellar reputation for reliability *cough*, the SVR has depreciated about as much as the quotes in your high school yearbook. How does nearly $60k of depreciation in six years sound?
But Jag isn’t the only game in town when it comes to fast SUVs – you know the X3 M lurks. It too is dead, replaced by what I think is an overall better car. But if the SVR is your yearbook, this M is your ex’s Valentine’s Day cards. Some have lost over half their value in four years, especially the pre-LCI version.
Let’s see if Thor’s Hammer is a match for Bavarian cream.
The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR
I wouldn’t let the fact that this Jag is six years old deter you – they didn’t really change that much over the course of production.
- Beautiful Ultra Blue
- Ebony Interior
- Supercharged 5.0-liter V8, rated at 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque
- Eight-speed auto
- 38,800 miles
- Clean CarFax
- Missing one key?
- 2018 dates on tires
- Minor wear on the seat
- Paying $200 for a doc fee is stupid at an auction – don’t do it unless they are doing your documents, and why would they?
- Sold for $40,161 on Friday (2/21), so this is very recent.
Otherwise, a pretty flawless example. Because this one is a bit older, it went for less than some other examples, but I do figure the color would be a big plus. Like I said, the year on these doesn’t make much difference, but even spending $60k on a newer example is terrific value.
What’s that? The Germans are calling?
The 2022 BMW X3 M Competition
I’m picking an LCI example because they are much nicer looking. But you can get a pre-LCI example for nearly $30k!
- 33,800 miles
- Adelaide Grey/Black inside
- Brooklyn Grey Metallic
- You know the deal. S58, 503 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque
- Eight-speed auto
- Clean CarFax
- Minor rock chips and seat wear
- There’s a Thule rack (cool!), but they don’t have the key to unlock it (not cool)
- Rain guards on the windows, not really my thing. Stock otherwise.
- Sold for $54,513
Now, if such things matter to you, the X3 M is actually a tenth quicker to 60, and it’s lighter. My question is, why would that matter in a station wagon on stilts?
The X3 M is undoubtedly a better car. But with Jaguar F-PACE SVR values being what they are, and that motor being so much more visceral (not to mention better looking), the Jaaaaag is hard to pass up. At least it is for me.
What about you?
