Honestly now – 50/50? That’s the result of the M2 and Z3 M Coupe. M cars are a fascinating bunch aren’t they? No two are alike. Oh sure, you can say a new M2 and old Z3 M are different because of age, but what if I just picked two cars that had the same badge, like the M6? Hmm, E63 M6 values are plunging.
How about a V-10?
The 2008 BMW M6 Coupe vs the 2013 BMW M6 Coupe
There might be a new Pope, but there’s only one M5. Actually, there are several M5s, all with different engines. No two generations are alike. Regardless, it is a revered badge among the M faithful.
Then there’s the M6. Not as loved. It’s been killed twice now by BMW, and as this week’s review showed, they still can’t seem to understand the assignment all the way. The E63 took the S68 V-10 from the M5, and wrapped it in a body so awkward-looking, you’ll think you landed inside a high school prom. BUT…it is a V-10, and a glorious one at that.
Since they apparently kill Polar Bears or something, BMW thought it would be nice to take out two cylinders for their next generation, then add two turbochargers. More power. More speed. Less soul.
What do both share in common? Yeaaa, you got it – depreciation. These were expensive back in the day – an F13 could easily go to $150,000. Now we’re in Mitsubishi Mirage territory? But it’s still V-10! And it’s still faster than most new cars today. Since E63 M6 values are so low, let’s see if now’s the time.
The 2008 BMW M6 Coupe
I admit to feeling conflicted about the looks of this car. Bangle-era BMWs are what they are. Sometimes, from certain angles, it’s not bad. Other times…well, you know.
- 79,900 miles
- Seven-speed SMG, big bummer
- Black Sapphire Metallic over black leather
- V-10 – 500 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque. Amazing that the six in a new M3 is more powerful.
- Carbon fiber roof
- Needs new PPF, wheels are scratched, rock chips, and was in an accident in 2009.
- Minimal mods – black kidney grilles and front splitters. But they look like they were spray-painted so big LOL there
- Bid to $8,500 so far
E63 M6 values have sort of bottomed out. If this were manual and topless with low miles, it could fetch almost $50k. But truth be told, a majority aren’t manual, and they aren’t topless. It’s more of a $25k car, and given this one’s higher mileage and incorrect transmission, you might snag it for as little as $10k. Look at this one.
Not your kind of party? Bring out the V-8!
The 2013 BMW M6 Coupe
Better-looking. More reliable. Faster. Cheaper?
- 51,300 miles
- Space Grey Metallic over Black leather
- Seven-speed automatic (DCT)
- S63 V8, 560 horsepower, 500 lb-ft of torque
- Carbon fiber roof
- Bang & Olufsen sound system
- Someone took a bite out of the rear bumper
- 2017 date codes on tires – replace now
- No mods!
- Bid to $16,500
25,000 few miles, faster, better. Sure it’s double the price, but instead of Mirage, it’s used Civic. An incredible amount of performance for not much money. F13 M6s (coupes) are usually the cheapest, with the convertible and Gran Coupe fetching slightly more. Again, spec the right color, the right options (Read: Competition), and even the rarest of rare six-speed manual, and you’ve got a $65k car. But if none of that matters to you, some can go for less than $25k.
What M6 would you take home?
